Google Announce Mobile Friendly as a Ranking Factor
Here is some important news you should be aware of from Google.
Google has recently announced that ‘mobile friendly’ will become a ranking factor from the 21st of April 2015.
Mobile and tablet browsing accounts for upwards of 35% of website visits for most sites, so it’s no surprise that Google have decided to include this into their algorithm.
What is a surprise is that not only have Google confirmed a ranking factor but also that it begins to roll on the 21st April. It is very unusual for Google to make such statements, so it is likely that this change will be a major one and will have far reaching effects on search positions.
There are a number of technical aspects required by Google to be ‘mobile friendly’. The most important is that you have either a separate mobile site, an APP or a responsive design. Google have confirmed that each of these options is treated equally, meaning it doesn’t matter which solution you choose, so long as you have one of them.
For the majority, a responsive design is preferable as it offer maximum flexibility and at minimum cost. There are a number of other new technical requirements relating to encoding and file permissions that Google have stipulated.
If you are unsure if your site is mobile friendly we are offering a Mobile Friendly Site Audit service.
If your site does not have either a mobile version, APP or Responsive design I strongly suggest that this is addressed, as it’s likely that there will be a heavy penalty for sites that do not. If your unsure what a responsive design is, try viewing Nude-Webdesign on both your PC and mobile for an example.
