Why is my pool heater leaking?

What is a Pool Heater Heat Exchanger?

The heat exchanger is the copper tubing coil that transfers heat from the burning flue gas through the walls of the heat exchanger into the pool water circulating through it. In simple terms it is where the cooler pool water enters and then leave hot. Its located directly above the burners in the combustion chamber in most pool heaters.

How do I know if my pool heater heat exchanger is damaged?

Other than water appearing around the bottom of the pool heater, you may notice white smoke which is really Steam coming from the top of the heater. The heater may continue to work until the leak in the heat exchanger becomes larger after which the heater may shut down completely.

If you suspect your heaters heat exchanger is faulty, it is a good idea to shut the power off to the heater and the pump.  Pool water circulating through the heat exchanger will create more damage to the heat exchanger and the other parts of the heater which may increase the cost of the repairs.
