Many people remember the original My Little Pony cartoons from the eighties but the old cartoons are very different from the new “Friendship is Magic” franchise. The show was originally geared towards girls and women but now new fans calling themselves “Bronies” (or a “Brony”, singular), are the biggest supporters.

While Bronies may get a lot of flac from the remainder of the internet world—a Brony is from “bro” and “pony”--they have appreciated the masterfully-created cartoon episodes of “Friendship is Magic”, and they recognized that there is quite a bit of humour geared towards adults. There are many Pony-styled revamps of adult classic movies such as the Indiana Jones series. The “Friendship is Magic” franchise still always contains at least one helpful lesson, which children will no doubt appreciate, but the stories and new animation style have caught the eye of many. The revamped look of the My Little Pony franchise appears to have its roots in Japanese anime styling, but combines elements of familiar cartooning as well for a nearly globally appealing look.

Bronies have created a variety of skilfully done videos, memes, songs, and others. The Bronies are comprised of males aged 13-35 and the term Brony is merging to include anyone who is an active member of the community whether they are female or male. Fans are drawn to the strong characters that have been created in the My Little Pony reboot, which portrays a variety of different personalities with equal appreciation of strengths. The show is representative of the values of acceptance while holding each other accountable in a constructive manner.

The Brony community has scores of highly-skilled fans who exercise their various talents, network, and share all within the construct of the Kingdom of Equestria. The show is destroying previously engrained gender bias in an amazing way. It could also be noted that there is more action in the Brony community because of the shift toward digitally-led lives which often leaves people feeling emotionally disconnected and ironically more alone than ever before. The community embraces the philosophy of Equestria, which involves honesty, laughter, magic, kindness, generosity, and loyalty.

Bronies have suffered a fair amount of bias towards their fandom, but continue despite the harassment. The Brony community has even launched some large conferences, the most well known being BronyCon (formerly BroNYCon), which will be moving to the Baltimore, Maryland area for the first time ever this year. A new convention was established to keep local New York City fans engaged called Big Apple Ponycon, which is completely unrelated to BronyCon. If the franchise is intelligent it will add marketing and fan gear such as the variety of “Brony” shirts available to their line of products. Many Bronies are proud of their affiliation with the community and do not let harassment or accusatory questions sway their opinions. The franchise could actually benefit from marketing products specifically for adults as well as children since the fandom is quickly gaining more ground among college-aged adults than for children.
