Gansbaai is renowned for its well-kept nature, rugged and unspoilt; it is the perfect get away from your busy city life. The small town has become popular for its abundance in sea and wildlife,with a wide range of floral and fynbosvegetation along the coast. Gansbaai is ideally located between Cape Town and Cape Infanta.

Gansbaai provides the most unique land based whale watching spots in the world and is also famous for its excellent fishing spots. In recent years, the small town of Gansbaai has established itself as the great white shark capitalof the world. Come face-to-face with the oceans biggest predator, the great white shark, by driving a mere 4km is Gansbaai’s sister town, Kleinbaai. Home of the Great White project, it is the springboard for all shark cage diving in the area. The town is now also known as the Big 2 Town, because of the various visits from the great whites.

Gansbaai has done a good job at preserving their nature and history, the small town was named after a colony of Egyptian geese. Today Gansbaai is one of the few destinations left in the world where visitors can still shark cage dive. Also known as the “coast of contrasts” due to the old shipwreck remains found resting along the coast. Over a thousand lives have been lost between Danger Point and Cape Infanta with more than 140 ships being wrecked in the process. Guests also have the chance to visit the majestic Danger Point Lighthouse, built in 1895, to provide better security for the ships passing through these rough waters.

Gansbaai hasn’t changed much from 1881 when Johannes CornelisWessels, an adventurist discovered the fishing possibilities and fresh fountain water nearby the harbour. It has since developed its nature and business section, providing guests with a selection of accommodation such as b&b’sand various activities to take part in.

The town has much to offer, especially for visitors that are looking for an adventure. There are magnificent hiking trails through the Milkwood forests, caves to be explored or a simple sit in at the harbour restaurant to enjoy fresh seafood. Take time to view the scenic cliffs of De Kelders or take walks on the white sandy beaches of Pearly beach.



A major attraction is this natural haven is the Klipgat caves; spend the day exploring these majestic caves, where diggings left by Stone Age people and the Khoi-san can be seen.With a semi-Mediterranean climate and reasonable weather, which changes between winter and summer, Gansbaaimay experience wonderful weather throughout the year.

Annually hosted events in Gansbaai are; the Wine-Tasting Guild (which takes place on the last Friday of every month), Baardskeerdersbos Art Route, Baardskeerdersbos Fees Basaar and the Big 2 Town Music Festival.
