[MUNSTER - 10/17/2018] - Hospice of the Calumet Area, a non-profit establishment in Indiana, provides necessary support to formal and informal caregivers of hospice patients. Through various programs, the organization helps caregivers cope with the loss of a patient.

The Need to Support Hospice Caregiver

Many hospice caregivers do not receive the support they need to carry out their tasks and cope with the loss of a patient. According to one study published in a 2016 issue of the Journal of Oncology Practice, only one-third of all cancer patient caregivers report being asked by a healthcare provider if they need anything to help them with their job; even fewer caregivers are asked about their well-being.

A full-time caregiver in the US works an average estimate of 8.3 hours per day for 13.7 months. Given these long hours, the study found that many caregivers end up compromising their physical and emotional health and their personal relationships. Caregivers are no longer able to spend time with their own families and carry out regular everyday tasks.

The study added that caregiving is a high-risk occupation that can cause depression, heart disease, and early death. While coping with the loss of a patient, many caregivers develop a low sense of self-efficacy, which leads them to a poor mental state.
