In 2010, the Community College Facility Coalition (CCFC) awarded Paul Bunton the Award of Excellence for his design of a building on the campus of Southwestern College. The CCFC is an organization that provides information and services to California’s community college districts. They provide advocacy for facilities issues and work with the college’s business partners on anything concerning the college’s facilities. Paul Bunton has been a member of the association for many years and understands how prestigious this award is.

The design that Paul Bunton and his team won the award for is a plaza that connects the community of Chula Vista, California with the existing campus of Southwestern College. This plaza contains a rooftop terrace and many water features. The surrounding campus buildings are in the design of Mayan Revival and the new addition has used many of the same design elements. Paul Bunton was sure to pay homage to the existing structures by incorporating many of the same design elements, but with a modern twist. As with all of Paul Bunton’s designs, the new plaza at Southwestern College is eco-friendly and sustainable.

Rebecca Cook, the Chancellor of Southwestern College, was thrilled with the new plaza. “It looks like it has always been here. Paul Bunton was able to pick up elements of the surrounding buildings and incorporate them into his design. We are thrilled that our students have a safe and beautiful way to get from the community to the campus. Paul Bunton was able to include a new bookstore, café and cultural center in the design. We are thrilled that he was so willing to use eco-friendly materials and made the plaza energy efficient.” Paul Bunton is known for his inspirational, practical and sustainable designs.

Paul Bunton’s award winning design for Southwestern College is just another example of how he is able to combine beautiful design with sustainability. The team of architects at BCA Architects, led by Paul Bunton, has been creating inspirational schools for the last 25 years. It is no wonder that Paul Bunton was awarded the 2010 Community College Facility Coalition Award of Excellence for his design.
