Irving, Texas – September 23, 2019 – Researchers have been working on more advanced approaches to detecting, treating, and preventing prostate cancer. Although most men who are found to have the disease live longer, the challenge remains in choosing the right diagnostic tools that will identify the disease early.

Here are some of the advances in prostate cancer diagnosis:

• Improving PCa Biopsies – For a long time, patients with prostate cancer have been diagnosed using biopsies guided by transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) imaging. The challenge, however, is that this method does not indicate the location of the disease within the prostate. The biopsy samples can miss finding aggressive cancers that need immediate attention, or they can overdiagnose and cause patients to be overtreated.

Scientists have developed a diagnostic procedure that combines MRI with TRUS to provide accurate biopsies of the prostate. MRI can accurately identify cancer locations within the prostate, especially when fused with ultrasound imaging. This type of fusion biopsy allows doctors to find possible cancer locations when guided by ultrasound.

• Testing Machine Learning – The use of machine learning or artificial intelligence is still being tested to help identify suspicious locations in an MRI that should undergo a biopsy. If successful, artificial intelligence will improve biopsy sample analysis to help determine the cancers that need active surveillance and those that can be treated right away.

“Having the ability to find the smallest amount of prostate cancer that is metastatic can help physicians to develop better treatment plans,” explains Dr. Echt. "This will also help to pinpoint recurrent disease and make informed treatment decisions that will result in better survival of the patients."
