A ground breaking study published in PLOS Medicine, describes a mouse model with a humanized liver used for detecting hepatic drug toxicity prior to human testing. If these TK-NOG mice were available to be used for preclinical testing in 1993, the tragedy of the FIAU human trial could have been avoided, in which 7 of 15 participants suffered liver failure with lactic acidosis and 5 subsequently died.
