This comes in the wake of reports suggesting that kids are eating more unhealthy snacks, particularly those which are rich in sodium.

LOS ANGELES, California (April 21, 2015) -- 110 Athletics, a leading sports nutrition specialist based in Indiana, recently underscored the importance of healthy snacks especially among children.

This comes in the wake of reports suggesting that kids are eating more unhealthy snacks, particularly those which are rich in sodium.

“Snacks are beneficial to children as it promotes good nutrition and encourages lifelong healthy habits. Snacks are particularly important for children who have smaller stomachs compared to adults, and hence can’t hold much food in one sitting. Kids need to eat snacks to curb hunger and provide them with the energy they need for the rest of the day,” the company said in a statement.

But children should not be eating sodium and sugar-rich foods as snacks, as these foods pose a lot of health risks.

It cited a recent report that sodium intake from snacks of children represented nearly half of the average daily consumption of sodium, per a study conducted by experts at the University of Torino in Italy.

The researchers pointed out that children are eating too much pizza, chips, and other salty foods for snacks.

“Too much of these sodium-rich foods can cause high blood pressure when the children eventually grow up,” it added.

110 Athletics asserts that parents should make it a point to serve yummy, healthy snacks for their kids or to pack delicious after school snacks for their children.

“Parents should not allow their children to eat junk food as snacks. Instead, they should give them nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and whole grains. Majority of snacks for children should be fruits and vegetables because most of children these days are not meeting recommended daily servings.”

The firm says its nutritious wafers designed for young athletes may also be served as healthy snacks for kids. The wafers, which come in vanilla and chocolate flavors, may complement healthy kids lunches as well.
