GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (April 21, 2015)- Sports nutrition company 110 Athletics is alarmed that many of today’s children are snacking on unhealthy foods even if they are not hungry.

110 Athletics was referring to a study conducted by nutrition experts from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia that showed children as young as three years old would eat a calorie-laden snack even after eating lunch.

“Children are exposed to advertisements for delicious but unhealthy foods, that they won’t say no to eating a calorie-laden snack like a bag of chips or a bar of chocolates,” the company said in a statement.

In the study, all 37 children who took part in the test ate snacks after a healthy, filling lunch. Lead researcher Holly Harris attributed this to children being bombarded with advertisements on unhealthy snacks.

“It’s even more alarming when one considers the age of the participants in the study,” 110 Athletics added.

The company believes that parents should make available nutritious snacks for kids like fruits and vegetables and think of kids healthy lunch ideas to dissuade children from overeating. “Parents should give kids healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables instead of chips and chocolates.”

110 Athletics says the selection should be nutrient dense, and not calorie dense. “Parents must give their kids more fruits and vegetables for snacks, and not cookies.”

It also said that when parents are to choose between two foods with the same number of calories, they must go with the food that is healthier. “A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice may have the same number of calories as that of a glass of soda, but it is definitely a healthier choice since it does not have added sugar.”

110 Athletics, which produces nutritious wafers designed for young athletes, says parents should be very conscious of what they’re children are eating. “Parents should not be complacent at all when it comes to their children’s diet, as these kids may grow up obese if their eating habits are not changed.”
