Despite having one of the largest car donation drives in the country, The National Kidney Foundation explains that a surprisingly small percentage of potential patrons are aware they can donate a car to charity through the organization.

The National Kidney Foundation’s donation drive is named “Kidney Cars” and was first offered in 1983. According to current estimates the organization has received over 650,000 donations during that time, with the drive receiving an average of 100 new vehicles a day. Cars donated through the drive are all fully tax deductible and proceeds from donations help to fund a wide variety of educational and action-oriented initiatives within The National Kidney Foundation’s various branches. In total, The National Kidney Foundation estimates their Kidney Cars program has helped to raise over $250 million for the organization.

The car donation process has been streamlined, The National Kidney Foundation explains, and this simplicity may be a primary reason for the program’s success. The Kidney Car program is free to take advantage of (no cost to donate) and most cars are picked up within one day of filling out the forms required to donate. These forms are currently available online at The National Kidney Foundation’s website, and even though you can drop off your car at a National Kidney Foundation office for easy donation, towing for pickups is available nationwide- even in regions lacking an official organizational office.

In addition to accepting cars The National Kidney Foundation clarifies they also accept trucks and boats, in addition to unconventional vehicles such as farm equipment and airplanes. Non-running vehicles may also be donated and most donations are fully processed and completed within six weeks of filling out paperwork.
