Sean Patrick McVay is a recreational outdoorsman. He likes to camp and hike in forested areas protected from development. He supports conservation efforts to protect land from overdevelopment.

People who try to protect nature have been labeled by a variety of names. Some names are negative like hippy or tree-hugger but other names have a positive connotation like conservationist. As an individual who enjoys unspoiled nature, Sean Patrick McVay supports people who promote conservation efforts.

Sean Patrick McVay's own love for nature developed as a boy, "Like many kids I was fascinated by bugs. Although I didn't like being bit, I thought it was fascinating that they could fly or crawl. My fascination with nature extended from my own backyard to the woods where we'd go camping," says Sean Patrick McVay. Even today, camping is a recreational past-time enjoyed by Sean Patrick McVay.

"If we didn't protect forests, we'd be missing out on a lot. There is more to forests than trees. Forests are homes to many indigenous birds and animals you don't think about until you start to consider camping among them," says Sean Patrick McVay. Protecting the forest was encouraged not only by his parents every time he went camping but also by awareness efforts done in school to stop littering. Even Smokey the Bear with "Only you can prevent forest fires," had an impact on Sean Patrick McVay.

"If there is a petition to protect undeveloped land, I'm willing to sign it," says Sean Patrick McVay. One petition he signed was to get a land developer to re-plant trees they knocked down illegally when they tried to develop a residential neighborhood over wetland. "Ever year you'd see swans and ducks, it was wrong to try to get away with not replanting the trees that were there before" says Sean Patrick McVay.

Residential development isn't the only development that sometimes bothers Sean Patrick McVay. "I know it may have been the result of the recession but I see all these strip malls and office buildings that are sitting vacant. No business is renting it out and it is land that animals used to forage around. Now the field is an empty parking lot growing weeds. It is kind of heart-breaking," says Sean Patrick McVay. Sean Patrick McVay is proud to support conservation efforts so more people can enjoy the beauty of nature and to prevent animals from running out of their natural habitat.
