Some of his trips have taken him to places like Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where abject poverty is the norm. He has also seen the devastating effects of a struggling economy in some U.S. and Puerto Rican cities. Thus, Jerry Gonzalez of Venezolano encourages students to further their educations as much as possible to rise out of poverty or related hardships.

Gonzalez is passionate about the tourism industry. He explained to the Harlem students that being a hospitality worker involves much more than running a hotel. It involves getting to know new people every day and making sure their needs are met with patience, promptness, and a good attitude.
