Gary Snell is not one to sit back and watch as negative cultural changes occur. In 2012 he joined the fight to prevent a multistory shopping and housing complex from being built on Cork Street in London. Unfortunately, this campaign was unsuccessful, and part of the historic street will be demolished to make way for this complex. As a result, many gallery owners are being forced to move their businesses due to increased rents. Gary Snell is among these business owners, and is considering moving his gallery away from London.
Cork Street is a world-renowned area for the arts. The street features many art galleries, which feature a range of artworks from classical works to contemporary pieces. Located in the West End neighborhood of London, Cork Street has a long history with the arts dating back for nearly a century.
Gary Snell’s gallery, Alpha Gallery, has been a fixture of the Cork Street community for many years. His gallery is well-known by the area’s art lovers, and has been a popular location since its founding, featuring the works of the world’s most recognized sculptor Auguste Rodin along with emerging artists. For Gary Snell, the thought of moving away from this area is very difficult. He explains, “My gallery has grown up on Cork Street. The area has provided me with rich opportunities for my business that I may be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.”
Despite the challenge of moving somewhere else, Gary Snell is also excited by the opportunity. He says, “Leaving Cork Street will be hard, but the bright side to this move is that I would be able to explore a new area and share my collections with a different community.”
