Motorcycles are fun to ride, with many people choosing to buy them. Before purchasing, however, it helps to know which machine to choose.

Few things in life can compare to the thrill and adrenaline that rushes through the veins when you cruise the mountain curves on your motorcycle. Sure, they are dangerous when handled improperly, but motorcycles offer a sense of excitement that no vehicle, even a sports car, can provide. Riding a motorcycle requires concentration, sharp skills, cat-like reflexes, and the ability to think quickly in tough situations. Because of the inherent dangers of motorcycles, the barrier to entry is high.

Trenton Dierkes has been riding motorcycles for most of his adult life. He's become somewhat of an expert in his hometown and offers information on the various types of motorcycles available to riders.

Quick history
The first two-wheeled, gasoline powered motorcycle was built in 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler and Wihelm Maybach. It was called the Petreoleum Reitwage. Since then, Daimler and Wihelm’s invention has taken on different directions, with the five categories being:

Cruisers
Harley Davidson bikes belong in this category. Cruisers have low seats that create a laid-back riding position. Some have large engines but are not designed for high performance.

Sportbikes
Sportbikes are very popular in the United States, largely because they are well-tuned machines capable of super-high performance. They require a lot of skill to handle and aren't recommended for beginner or intermediate riders. Because of their powerful engines, they are loud.

Touring bikes
These are designed for long distance travel. They come fitted with windshields, luggage trunks, and even GPS. They have high seats that make it comfortable during off-road riding and are liked for the good experience they provide. If you are looking to take a cross-country motorcycle trip, this is the machine for you.

Dirt bikes
Dirt bikes, or dual-sport bikes, are light machines that are illegal to ride on public streets and highways. They feature small engines, high seats and are used for a variety of competitions.

Standard bikes.
These bikes contain elements of the other bikes and provide an upright riding position. They are often very good machines and make the perfect choice for beginners. Standard bikes are easy enough to figure out and make good starter machines.
