Bariatric Surgery Isn’t The Only Weight Loss Option

Plano, TX, June 10, 2016 – People who have tried diet and exercise to lose weight with no success often find themselves frustrated and concerned that nothing will help them bring their body mass indexes into a healthy range. While bariatric surgery is a well-proven option that provides many a great deal of success, this weight-loss intervention isn’t recommended for everyone. When alternatives to surgery are required, patients will find there are some highly successful methods available.

Perhaps one of the most noted recent developments on the weight loss front involves the use of a minimally invasive procedure that can help those not eligible for bariatric surgery shed pounds. Balloon implants, in fact, are showing a great deal of promise in helping those who are overweight tackle concerns without the need for surgery.

“Bariatric surgery is a tremendously effective weight loss option, but there are certain BMI and/or health condition requirements,” explains Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas-based Nicholson Clinic, one of the top weight loss surgery centers in the country. “This can leave those who are merely overweight or just under the threshold for surgery without an option. The Gastric Balloon procedure can help in these instances. This procedure is also an excellent choice for patients who do not wish to undergo more invasive surgery.”

Gastric Balloon implant procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and do not involve the use of incisions. Instead, a tiny balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth. A catheter is attached to the balloon and is used to help inflate it once it has been placed. Once inflated, the balloon mimics the effects of bariatric surgical procedures that are meant to shrink the stomach’s holding capacity to promote weight loss. Unlike surgery, however, the procedure is not permanent. Balloons tend to remain in place for only about six months.

“Patients who have undergone the Gastric Balloon procedure have enjoyed tremendous success so far,” Dr. Nicholson says. “The average weight loss in the six-month period is about 30 pounds. Combine with medication management and the nutrition guidance and fitness tips we offer and patients can lose around 35-50 pounds depending on excess weight.”

The Gastric Balloon procedure also provide a six-month window for patients to develop healthier lifestyle habits. Proper diet and exercise, for example, are critical during a balloon’s use and long after.
