Distraction is an inevitable part of life, particularly in the age of mobile phones, Facebook and the Internet. In just about every occupation and industry, with so much around to distract us, it’s amazing we get any work done at all, says Jo Macdermott, from Next Marketing Agency in Melbourne.

Jo shared her advice for Business Owners who are struggling with productivity.

1. Working from Home Trap
Learning to say no to temptation is one of the most important skills that you can learn if you are trying to start or run your own business. Your business productivity can be greatly improved and stress levels reduced if you are able to successfully shut out overly demanding clients, distracting text messages, well-meaning friends who call in the middle of the day or any one of a number of other things that can place an unnecessary burden on your time. Learning to say no to temptations can also help you in your everyday life, improve your health and allow you to create a better work life balance.

2. How to say no
So just how do you learn to say no? According to a recent study published by the Journal of Consumer Research, it’s all in the phrasing. In a study of 120 students, researchers discovered that replacing “I can’t,” with “I don’t,” gave students a significant advantage when it came to resisting temptation and saying no to unnecessary distractions.

The theory behind this research is that saying; “I don’t” instead of “I can’t” provides more of a sense of empowerment and control. Using the word “can’t” reminds us of our limitations and makes us feel like something is out of control whereas saying that we “don’t” do something makes it a personal choice and therefore we are more likely to stick to it.

“Being very organised and strategic with your time doesn’t mean spending a lot of the day chained at your desk. By following the process as noted above, Business Owners will enjoy improved productivity with less time and effort on their part.“ said Jo Macdermott, Marketing Consultant, Next Marketing.
