Converters help to keep older devices working

It is interesting to see the new developments in telecommunication technology and how it has changed the way we work and use our time at leisure.

Standards and protocols are being constantly redeveloped in the telecommunication sector and as new inventions are made the old ones are thrown into obscurity. The case of RS 232 protocol that was used for long time is a point to moot. Both the RS232 protocol and the more advanced RS 485 protocol have been replaced by the USB or the Universal-Serial Bus Port which is more efficient and adaptable. Yet whenever it is needed to convert the RS 232 signals to RS 485 signals, the RS 232 RS 485 converter has to be used. A RS 232 RS 485 converter is also known as a RS 232 to RS 485 adapter and is used so that devices that use RS 485 protocol get compatible signals. Most RS 232 RS 485 converters do not require external source for power but can derive the power from the port. The technical meaning of RS232 RS485 converters is that the input value is of RS232 standard and output of RS485 standard. One of the features of RS 232 to RS 485 adapter that make its use even better than USB port is that it can be safely used when the distance between the data terminal and the peripheral devices is 4000 ft. or 1200 meters or less which is much more than what is possible in commonly used USB ports and devices.
rs232 to rs485 adapter is now a slim and strong devices with a metal housing to protect it. Usually a RS 232 RS 485 converter has a 5-way female socket so that the data terminal device can be connected to a maximum of five peripheral devices. This is not a rule however and less or more of the female sockets can be provided. Another important function of a RS 232 to RS 485 converter is to protect the peripheral devices from voltage fluctuations that are potentially harmful. One of the best features of RS 232 to RS 485 converter is that, a maximum of 256 modules can be used without using repeater when this converter is used or 2048 modules can be used in case a repeater is used.
RS232 to RS485 converters can be of two types; isolated or non-isolated. The isolated RS232 RS485 converter has optical isolator that separates the data lines in the data terminal. This is a great feature since it prevents electronic-noise, spikes in voltage and protects the devices; both, the computer and peripheral devices from damage due to surges and ground-loops. The RS232 to RS485 adapter can also have the additional feature of isolating the external power supply from the computer and devices as an extra protection. This additional feature is incorporated when voltage fluctuation is an expected and routine phenomenon in the place where the RS232 to RS485 adapter and the computer and devices are installed.
