He has spent the last fourteen years teaching students and developing music programs for schools in the Houston area.
Mark Calima knows how to direct bands and educate his students in regards to music. He works hard in order to adapt to the different learning styles of his students, and he is mindful that they all come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and walks of life. Here are some useful tips for other professionals in the field.
Figure out the different learning styles of your students. No two students are the same, so it’s up to the director of the band to figure out the best way to teach each of them. This doesn’t mean that you necessarily have to work with each student individually, it just means that you have to pay attention to how they learn things in class the best. This is the fastest way to see results.
Appoint leaders of each section of the band. This is not to isolate or alienate the best people in each section, it just serves to make management easier on your part. These leaders will be able to help you motivate students to work harder and practice more often. They will also be able to relay information to you in regards to how each musician is working individually in the different sections.
Start with the basics before you move on to more complex pieces. Although this can be harder if you’re serving as a professional band director like Mark Calima, you have to figure out where your students are in terms of skill. If you have to start from the beginning, you need to make sure that each student masters the basics in order to build on a strong foundation.
