Sony hat sich bei der Entwicklung der neuen Xperia X Reihe wie schon bei den Xperia Z5 Modellen auf die Kameratechnik konzentriert. Das Xperia X ähnelt dem Xperia Z5 zudem rein äußerlich sehr, wenngleich beim Gehäuse nun gänzlich auf Glas verzichtet wurde, überwiegend Aluminium zum Einsatz kommt und Ecken und Kanten nun runder wirken. Das Display des X ist zudem 5 Zoll statt 5,2 Zoll groß, löst aber erneut mit Full HD (1920 x 1080 Pixel) auf. Ebenfalls genau wie beim Xperia Z5 hat Sony beim Xperia X einen Fingerabdrucksensor in den am rechten Rand sitzenden An/Aus-Schalter integriert und auf die Rückseite eine Hauptkamera mit 23 Megapixel Sensor gepackt. Letztere soll allerdings im Vergleich zur Z5-Kamera technisch verbessert worden sein. Insbesondere der Autofokus soll jetzt noch schneller und zuverlässiger arbeiten. Auf der Vorderseite findet sich jetzt außerdem eine 13 Megapixel Kamera mit 22 Millimeter Weitwinkelobjektiv.

Angetrieben wird Sonys aktuelles Flaggschiff-Smartphone von einem Qualcomm Snapdragon 650, was bei Enthusiasten für Enttäuschung sorgen dürfte, zumal es sich dabei nur um ein Mittelklasse-SoC handelt. In anderen auf dem MWC 2016 angekündigten Flaggschiff-Smartphones, darunter etwa das LG G5, steckt der High-End-Chipsatz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, der deutlich mehr Performance liefert als der Snapdragon 650. Nichtsdestotrotz sollte die Leistung des Prozessors für die allermeisten Anwender vollkommen ausreichen. Des Weiteren finden sich 3 Gigabyte RAM, 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, ein 2620-mAh-Akku und ein microSD-Kartenslot im Smartphone-Chassis.Das Xperia X ist 156 Gramm leicht und 7,9 Millimeter dünn, unterstützt Quick Charge und wird mit einem dezent von Sony angepassten Android 6.0 Marshmallow ausgeliefert werden. Den Herstellerangaben nach soll das Smartphone Ende Mai 2016 für rund 600 Euro auf dem deutschen Markt erhältlich sein. Wie von früheren Xperia-Modellen gewohnt, werden Käufer zwischen mehreren Farboptionen wählen können, und zwar Schwarz, Weiß, Rosé-Gold und "Lime Gold".

Das Galaxy S7 ist das kleinere Smartphone unter den beiden Samsung-Neuvorstellungen. Es besitzt ein 5,1 Zoll großes Super AMOLED Display mit der QHD-Auflösung von 2560 x 1440 Pixel, was eine Bildpunktdichte von 577 ppi ergibt. Das größere Samsung Galaxy S7 edge hingegen wartet mit einem 5,5 Zoll großen Super AMOLED QHD-Display (534 ppi) auf, das sich wie schon beim Vorgänger Galaxy S6 edge links und rechts gewissermaßen um die Gehäusekante wölbt.Samsung Galaxy S7: Die neue S7 Reihe bietet fortschrittlichste SoC-Technologie und die Rückkehr von microSD-Kartenslot sowie wasserdichtem Gehäuse. Abgesehen von der Bildschirmgröße und den daraus resultierenden Gehäusemaßen setzt Samsung bei beiden Galaxy S7 Modellen fast exakt dieselbe Technik ein. Einzig zusätzliches Unterscheidungsmerkmal ist die Kapazität des fest verbauten Akkus. Im S7 steckt ein 3000-mAh-Energiespeicher, während es im S7 edge eine 3600-mAh-Batterie ist. Beide Smartphones werden in der hierzulande erscheinenden Modellvariante von einem neuen, nicht näher spezifizierten Octa-Core-Prozessor mit einer maximalen Taktrate von 2,3 Gigahertz angetrieben. Sehr wahrscheinlich handelt es sich dabei um den Samsung Exynos 8890, der im fortschrittlichen 14-nm-Verfahren gefertigt wird. Um die Temperaturen des SoC auch unter hoher Last möglichst niedrig und die Performance damit möglichst hoch zu halten, verbaut Samsung zur Kühlung eine mit Wasser gefüllte Heatpipe. In einigen Regionen außerhalb Europas werden die Südkoreaner die Smartphones auch mit einem ebenfalls nicht exakt benannten Qualcomm-Chipsatz anbieten. Bei diesem handelt es sich nach derzeitigem Informationsstand um den Snapdragon 820.
