International migration contributed 82 percent of population growth in the period starting at April 1 and ending on July 1. Moreover, it reached an extraordinary level, driving total population increase. This was the second largest growth for a quarter since 1971. The growth in Canada’s population was 168,687 during the second quarter of the present year. The figure for, international migration was 138,978, which is 82 percent, of the population. As per the Statistics Canada, this is a peak level of international migration for a quarter. International migration was the main factor of population growth, both at the national level, and also at the provincial level.
Method of calculation of increase
The calculation of increase in International migration is done by adding:
The number of immigrants,
Returning emigrants
Net non-permanent residents who arrive in Canada. Subsequently the temporary emigration and leaving emigrants are subtracted.
Nationally, Canada welcomed 87,661 new immigrants in this quarter. The strength of non-permanent residents grew by 60,446 in the quarter, which was high in recent years. The reason of increase mainly was more number of work and study permit holders, and refugee claimants. This level of international migrants also helped to offset a record number of deaths (67,997) in this three-month period. The natural population increase in Canada, calculated as births minus deaths, was 29,709.
Facts from the provinces
New Brunswick and Nova Scotia had a natural decrease in population, because of more deaths, than births. Additionally, it was off-set by the arrival of international migrants in the provinces. Moreover, increase in international migration, was the main factor in population growth, in many Canadian provinces, and also in the Yukon Territory.
Also Alberta, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories showed peak increase. The same facts were found in the remaining provinces, and in the Yukon Territory. Quebec had a growth of 19,506 non-permanent residents, which is a record for a three-month period. Finally, there was unprecedented increase, in the number of non-permanent residents, for a second quarter in Ontario, at 28,329 and in British Columbia at 8,189.
