Huawei hat die Tablets auf die Wiedergabe von Videos und Audiodateien ausgelegt: Der Hersteller betont, dass das angezeigte Bild dank spezieller Algorithmen besonders verzerrungsfrei sein soll. Die Lautsprecher sind von Harman Kardon zertifiziert und sollen einen 3D-Klang emulieren können.Im Inneren der Tablets arbeitet Huaweis Kirin-960-SoC, das bereits im Smartphone Mate 9 zum Einsatz kommt. Der Arbeitsspeicher ist bei allen drei neuen Mediapad M5 4 GByte groß. Der eingebaute Flash-Speicher hat 32 GByte, außer beim Mediapad M5 Pro: Hier hat Huawei 64 GByte verbaut. Mit einem Steckplatz für Micro-SD-Karten sind alle drei neuen Geräte ausgestattet.

Alle drei Tablets unterstützen Cat6-LTE und WLAN nach 802.11ac. Bluetooth läuft in der Version 4.2, ein GPS-Modul ist eingebaut. Die 8,4-Zoll-Variante des Mediapad M5 wiegt 310 Gramm, die beiden 10,8-Zoll-Versionen kommen auf 498 Gramm. Der Akku der kleinen Version hat eine Nennladung von 5.100 mAh, die beiden größeren Versionen kommen mit 7.500-mAh-Akkus.

Im Inneren arbeitet ein Core-i5-Prozessor der achten Generation (Kaby Lake Refresh), die Grafikkarte ist optional eine Nvidia Geforce MX150. Hier schafft das Medion maximal 183 Megabyte pro Sekunde. Teurere Notebooks mit SSD sind da deutlich flotter. Für Office-Programme reicht die Leistung locker, da gehört das Aldi-Notebook zu den schnellen Modellen seiner Preisklasse. Für grafisch opulente Spiele oder aufwendigen Videoschnitt hat das Medion nicht genug Power. Bei einem günstigen 14-Zoll-Notebook nicht selbstverständlich: Das Medion ist ziemlich leicht, dünn und gut verarbeitet. Genügend Anschlüsse sind an Bord, darunter auch einmal USB Typ C mit Displayport und einmal HDMI. Das 14-Zoll-Display zeigt 1920x1080 Pixel (Full HD). Die Oberfläche ist leicht mattiert. Dadurch spiegelt der Bildschirm nicht so stark, allerdings werden die Farben etwas blasser als bei einem Hochglanz-Display darstellt.
