UN3480 und UN3481 schreiben ausführliche Beförderungspapiere und eine Gefahrgutkennzeichnung vor sowie UN-geprüfte Verpackungen (mindestens Verpackungsgruppe II), etwa Metallboxen mit speziellen nichtbrennbaren Polstermaterialien. Dass man diese bei alltäglichen Gegenständen wie Smartphones oder Notebooks nicht antrifft, liegt an der die beiden UN-Nummern ergänzenden Sondervorschrift 188 (SV188, englisch SP188 für Special Provision). Sie erlaubt Vereinfachungen, wenn der zu versendende Akku nicht mehr als 100 Wh hat – was auf alle Notebook-, Smartphone- und Tablet-Akkus zutrifft. Für die Akkus von E-Bikes gelten die Erleichterungen nicht, denn sie fassen je nach Modell 250 bis 500 Wh.

SV188 wurde in andere Verpackungsvorschriften aufgenommen, welche je nach Beförderungsmittel gelten: ADR SV188 für Straßentransporte, RID SV188 für Schienentransporte und IMDG SP188 für Transporte per Hochseeschiff.Mehrere Akkus, die die Energiegrenze jeweils nicht überschreiten, dürfen in beliebiger Stückzahl, aber nur bis maximal 30 Kilogramm pro Versandstück gepackt werden. Das Versandstück muss einen Falltest aus 1,2 Metern Höhe überstehen, ohne dass der Inhalt beschädigt wird oder verrutscht – der eingangs beschriebene lose Akku in Luftpolstertasche geht dadurch also gar nicht. Auch muss sichergestellt sein, dass der oder die Akkus nicht durch leitfähiges Verpackungsmaterial kurzgeschlossen werden.

Die Kennzeichnung außen am Paket wird ebenfalls dann notwendig, wenn ein Akku zusammen mit dem Gegenstand verschickt wird, den er betreiben soll. Anders als bei Einzelversand von Akkus sieht SV188 hier keine Gewichtsobergrenze mehr vor, wenngleich Logistikdienstleister natürlich eigene Regeln zum Maximalgewicht einer Sendung haben können.
