Ethics refers to the accepted standard guiding principles and values that govern a person’s behavior. This field also defines what is wrong and right. Many professional bodies and organizations have developed codes of ethics. These documents are meant to govern the conduct, transactions, and relationships within and beyond the work environment. Ethical behavior is not only a norm, but also a style of living. Thereafter, the objective of the following paper is to discuss ethics in terms of working environment and personal situations. Moreover, this work is based on the particular examples from my real life.
To start with, during my studies, I have come across many great examples of ethical behavior. Very often people who are faithfully devoted to their work demonstrate strong moral standards by supporting their belief system and aspiring to make sure that justice prevails. To be honest, it makes me proud and happy that I have met such people. Ethical behavior is extremely valuable and important at work, because with its absence, a lack of integrity and fairness might occur. Ethical behavior requires an individual to be honest, sincere, and to be acting in a manner that suggests equity and no biased treatment. Employers and employees can apply professional ethics when faced with a morally challenging situation in the workplace. It is possible to judge the person’s morale by their previous actions. Moreover, it is possible to deduct whether to accept the same approach or come up with another idea.
First, I would like to discuss one ethical dilemma that I have faced during summer practice in the international building company. In my situation, I was working as an intern in this organization. They used substandard building materials. I have confronted an issue related to bid shopping. According to the https://prime-essay.net/ , the employers chose the contractors according to the principle of the lowest salary, but they were not qualified enough, which, of course, had a negative impact on the project deliveries and quality of works. The building would not stand calamities like earthquakes. It was also more likely to be prone to cracking. It could collapse in the future. I told our boss about my concern, but he did not take any action. For the manager, cutting cost and maximizing profits was more important so that the company could survive the competitive business environment.
Eventually, I had to report it to the owner. It was my ethical duty to report. However, I was torn between loyalty to my employer and moral obligation to the law, as well as to the society, at large. At first, I felt that I had a lot to lose. However, I had to act morally, and also protect the lives of the public against any potential future tragedy.
During my studies at the university, I have faced an ethical dilemma related to cheating and moral obligation to be fair. It was more related to my personal perceptions and attitudes. Thereafter, my friend had managed to get the information about the upcoming exams and the questions that would be asked by the professor. Even though I was very tempted to get to know that, I made a decision that it would not be fair to act like that and refused the offered proposal. Nevertheless, I had not reported the student who offered me such information, but I asked him not to distribute it to anyone else. In this ethical dilemma, I realized that reporting the student would not be a good option as he could be dismissed from the university, but I also solved the issue by stopping him from distributing the information. I consider that I had found a fair solution.
In conclusion, it is important to mention that people must stick to ethical behaviors in everyday situations irrespective whether it is work or personal life.
