Kelechi Okereke has several years of experience already at the highest levels of investment banking and mergers and acquisitions with Citigroup. He first came to work for Citigroup as an analyst and advisor after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and working at the Nigerian Stock Exchange for a year. Okereke learned much from working with African businesses at the highest level and took to his mergers and acquisitions job at Citigroup well. He worked his way up in the company, working in different locations around the world, including New York and London, where he was a founding member of the company’s Africa Mergers and Acquisitions desk. He is now attending the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is nearing graduation. Okereke plans to use his graduate-level education as leverage to transition into emerging market private equity space.

Kelechi Okereke thought he wanted to be a doctor until he started thinking about the potential of developing economies in Africa, supporting new and improved companies, and helping people throughout many countries there. His interest in the economic development of his parents’ home country, Nigeria, particularly led to his career in investment banking. His experience during his year working in the Nigerian Stock Exchange led to better opportunities for him down the road in investment banking. As Okereke rose in the ranks of Citigroup, he started working with more companies interested in finding new investments in Africa and other developing markets and economies. He believes that new investment in these economies and markets will lead to new opportunities for the people living there.

Kelechi Okereke went back to school after several years with Citigroup gathering experience working with top-level companies and investors around the world. His continuing education will only bolster his career going forward in the investment banking industry. Okereke has found many opportunities to work with emerging economies and finding investors for companies in some of these markets. Okereke hopes that his efforts will lead to further investment in Africa and elsewhere in any small way.
