Pocket or Pocket less

The game of billiards popularly comes in two varieties.

Billiards; the game of sticks, balls and strikes has long been known as the “Noble Game of Billiards”. Thanks to its high-prices, mostly kings and noblemen possessed this table at home. Louis XIV of France, Abraham Lincoln, and Queen Mary of Scotts are all known to be billiards enthusiasts.

The billiards we are talking about from centuries is not limited to one game.It comes in many varieties; the popular ones being the pocket billiards and the carom billiards. As the games differ, so do the tables.

Pocket billiards is played on a table with pockets, while carom billiards is played on a pocket-less table.

More about the games

Pocket Billiards: In this game, the primary objective is to pocket the balls. The table size mostly ranges from 3 to 6 feet or 5 to 10 feet. The professional sized table is 4.5 feet to 9 feet, which is ideal for tournaments etc.

Here, the shots require the ball to be struck with the cue tip only. A player who fails to strike in this way is considered as a foul. If the player fails to pocket a ball on the table, he loses his turn. Then, the turn goes to the opponent, who tries to pocket the ball. A ball is considered pocketed when it drops off the table into the pocket. It is not considered pocketed if it drops off the floor or rebounds from the pocket to the table or the floor.

Carom Billiards: Here, the objective of the game is to hit the opponent’s balls with a cue ball. For instance: In 3-cushion billiards game, the cue ball must strike the object ball, which must then bounce off all the three cushions on the table, before striking the second object ball. Failure to strike the cushions or the second object ball results in the player losing his turn. The turn then goes to the opponent. This game is mostly played on table sized 5 to 10 feet.
