This press release offers information about the Biotechnology program at Centennial College that uses a project approach, with independently designed microbiology projects that enhance problem solving

Service Canada recently reported that new opportunities in biotechnology will be available primarily to new college graduates. At Centennial College’s Biotechnology college program, students learn how to carry out technical support and service roles as bench technicians in quality control and assurance to scientists, engineers and other professionals working in fields such as food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

A repeat recipient of the Centennial College President’s Academic Program Recognition Award for outstanding student satisfaction, the program is accredited by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board and recognized as meeting all the academic requirements for certification in the Technician category by the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists. These accreditations support program quality and provide mobility for graduates.

During the two-year program, students learn through a sensible approach, which includes independently designed projects that enhance problem solving and research skills in industrial microbiology as well as chemistry (analytical), organic and biochemistry. Eight up-to-date laboratories and modern wireless lecture facilities at Centennial College’s Morningside Campus allow students to learn common industry laboratory techniques, including appropriate safety procedures, isolating, enumerating and identifying microorganisms from many types of samples; preparing specimens for staining and become an expert light-microscopist; and more.

After two years of biotechnology technician courses, Centennial College gives students the option to graduate or continue into a third year of specialized topics such as advanced biotechnology and microbial genetics or systematic microbiology. Should they choose this option, students graduate with an advanced diploma. Other up-to-industry-standards credentials in which the offering results include Training in Occupational Health and Safety, WHMIS, GMP and HACCP. Graduates may apply for certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) to use the Certified Technician professional designation.
