Maaseik, Belgium., April 06, 2018 -- A wide variety of insulation materials is available on the European market, all with their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the area of application.
Besides the physical properties and the performance of insulation materials, sustainability criteria become increasingly important. The claims with regard to sustainability of a material are often made in relation to one single specific property, which is chosen as a basis for comparison. Properties such as primary energy consumption, recyclability or emissions to the environment are often brought forward.
The purpose of the Insulation Spider is to create a complete, differentiated and balanced approach to assess sustainability. Insulation materials were evaluated by the independent Swiss consultancy firm Büro für Umweltchemie (Consultants for Environmental Issues). The outcome is a simple and practical graphical tool that visualises the gths and weaknesses of insulating materials; an objective evaluation of sustainability and application aspects.
The chosen criteria cover the whole life cycle of the insulation materials. Characteristics are clearly visible in an easy to read graphic image, “the Insulation Spider”. In a detailed report methods, criteria and weighting factors are transparently explained.
