London, England, January 06, 2014 -- Blood storage and transportation operators are taking advantage of a new monitoring device which guards against exposure to unsafe temperatures. Launched at the British Blood Transfusion Society’s annual conference, Blood Temp is a cost-effective indicator that affixes to blood bags and provides a visible alert when exposed to a temperature of more than 10°C.

The user-friendly device will improve blood safety practices, reduce waste and provide auditable proof that blood has been stored, transported and delivered in accordance with regulatory standards.

Users of Blood Temp will be able to track individual blood bags during transit, with a coloured indicator providing an immediate alert when a breach occurs which may compromise the safety of the blood – all at a cost that’s less than half the investment needed for rival products!

David Roberts, The IMC Group’s pharmaceutical and healthcare business development manager, explained: “This simple but effective new product addresses a very real problem for all organisations involved in collecting, storing and delivering blood bags. Exposure to unacceptably high temperatures anywhere along that supply chain can render the blood unsafe, which cannot be allowed to happen when this lifesaving commodity is already in short supply. The Blood Temp will help prevent that situation from arising, but without large cost implications. For these reasons, we’re expecting a high level of demand.”
