Since their initial rise to prominence, electronic cigarettes have been the subject of controversy. As of this writing, e-cigs have not been studied or evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, but the FDA has been critical of the phenomenon in official statements. Though electronic cigarettes, or “e-cigs,” contain no tar, arsenic or other chemicals commonly found in cigarettes, e-liqiuds do contain some chemicals of their own, and many e-liquids even contain nicotine.
A new study, though, sheds some interesting light on the effects of secondhand vapor from electronic cigarettes. The study was published in the October edition of the Inhalation Toxicology journal. According to an analysis from E Cig Cabin:
“The study took four types of e-liquid and vaporized them in an electronic cigarette. They collected the emissions and figured out what the ‘indoor air concentrations’ were. They analyzed the amounts of various pollutants (including nicotine and TSNAs) as the vapor and smoke diluted into the room. They then took samples of tobacco smoke to compare them to. This is exactly what vapers have been waiting for! An unbiased study that simply compares the two to each other.”
The study found that tobacco cigarettes “markedly exceeded risk limits indicating a condition of ’Significant Risk’ of harm to human health.” But electronic cigarettes “revealed ‘No Significant Risk’ of harm to human health.” And while the effects of vaping are still hotly debated, this study provides good news on the issue of secondhand vapor.
