Marine Lubricants Market by Product (Mineral, Synthetic, Bio), by Application (Engine Oil, Hydraulic Oil, Grease, etc.) - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2012 – 2018

Ships and other marine equipment are liable to face extreme circumstances at sea – their natural habitat. Things like saline water, salty air, high mechanical stress, tropical heat, aggressive winds and continuous vibrations are not only natural but also a routine for marine vehicles. In such extreme situations, use of the right lubricant and proper maintenance is very essential for ensuring that all moving components on the ship operate reliably.

Issues such as the failure of a propeller, a driving motor, a winch or a crane can lead to fatal consequences and may result in additional issues such as high costs for expensive spare parts, repairs or delays in transport. In the worst of worst conditions, the crew, cargo, the complete vehicle and the sea environment are at a risk.

Increasing the reliability:

The right lubricant has the properties that can improve reliability and lifetime of the parts and components of any marine vehicle. Thus the investing in high quality lubricants clearly pays off by reducing operation and maintenance costs in the long run.

Precisely, the use of marine lubricants is significant for overcoming the major killer of machines and their components – friction, among others. Lubricant oils from different sources such as vegetables, animals or minerals have been used over many centuries for reducing friction, combating wear and tear and dissipating heat between moving parts of machines.

These days, however, two main types of marine lubricants are commonly used:
Mineral lubricants – made from the processing of crude oil
Synthetic lubricants – made from polyglycols or esters
For marine oils to be of utmost benefit to marine vehicles and marine diesel engines, it is essential that they possess properties such as:

Viscosity: the oil’s ability to flow freely at a particular temperature or pressure is called its viscosity and it is one of the most important properties of any marine lubricant. Viscosity of a lubricant is calculated by considering the operating temperature range and the application where it would be put to use. For instance, a lubricant with great viscosity would offer greater resistance to the movement of moving parts of a machine while a lubricant with lower viscosity would allow it to freely flow between the moving components, failing in lubricating them properly.

Volatility: the ability of a lubricant to catch fire at a lower flash point is called its volatility. This property is of particular importance when crankcase explosions are to be prevented. If the flash point of a lubricant is low, there are chances that it will ignite due to the high temperature in any situation and lead to an explosion. The safe limit of flash point for marine lubricants is above 2000 C.

Alkalinity: marine lubricants should be highly alkaline to neutralize the acidic sulphur residues in cylinders from the combustion of HFO.
Detergents: Marine lubricants are added detergents to inhibit the formation of deposits and keep the oil clean.

Oiliness: it is the property of the lubricant to stick on to the surfaces such as white metal bearings.

The Global Scenario:

The direct market returns for the marine lubricant industry depends upon the growth of the marine industry, which is its only end-user industry. As for many other industries, the global marine industry has huge growth opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. If global market analysts are to be believed, the global market of marine lubricants was worth nearly 2,272.6 kilo tons in 2011. Transparency Market Research, a US based market intelligence firm estimates that this industry could observe significant growth in the coming five years, at a CAGR of 6.13%, and amass market value worth 2,852.5 kilo tons by 2018.
