California (2021, September 24) - The Division of Workers' Compensation in California released new data this month. They found that claims filed for workplace injuries rose 51%.

The government division noted that infection claims went up to 31% during September as well. Alex Swedlow of the California Workers' Compensation Institute shared that this was similar to the numbers at the beginning of the pandemic. The increase of those filing claims and working with attorneys is sure to impact the system in place.

The data went further to state that death benefit claims for covid infections rose 80%. That number means that 26% of all workplace-related deaths were related to the pandemic. Over 75% of all covid-related illnesses in the state are among those who are of working age, according to Swedlow.

Over 158,000 cases of covid occurred among those of working age. There were over 1,100 fatalities among those. With these statistics, 5% of the individuals were those of workforce age. They either had the infection or died from it.

Swedlow goes further to state that 13% of all workers' compensation claims correlate with the pandemic. One in eight times that an employee would file for benefits would come from an infection or death from covid. These numbers are a significant difference from what occurred even just months ago, before the Delta variant.
