Graduate Emma Louise Hillman,a Emerging designer and RMIT Bachelor of fashion Design, Describing her practice as "Fashion Activism

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEGraduate Emma Louise Hillman. Emerging designer and RMIT Bachelor of Design (Fashion) (Honours) graduate Emma Louise Hillman debuts her graduate collection in an intimate and immersive presentation at No Vacancy Gallery, 7.30 pm, Monday 26th October.Describing her practice as "Fashion Activism" Emma explains; "I want to create an alternative to current grass-roots Activism, one that is more subtle and personal. I think being able to wear clothes that express your values as a person, and are made with those in mind, have the ability to empower and transform your day-to-day life."The theme of the collection centres around 'The Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture' (United States Senate Intelligence Committee, 2014). Blood red hand-dyed textiles, sharp tailoring and explosive silhouettes express Hillmans’ personal response to the Report."I've used super soft fabrics such as bamboo and silk for personal comfort, and to contrast the powerful silhouettes and themes of the collection. It is important the wearer feels empowered."She continues; "As an emerging designer in Melbourne, I'm aware of the opportunity I have to speak freely and am humbled by the responsibility."The presentation raises awareness about contemporary social, cultural and political issues, in turn encouraging others to do the same. Emma completed electives from the Environments stream alongside her design degree at RMIT, as well as volunteering for The Wilderness Society, which heavily informed her design philosophy.'What It Means To Dye' is to be held on Monday 26th October, 7.30pm, at No Vacancy Gallery, 32 Jane Bell Lane, QV Building, Melbourne. The event is free, and invitations are available by emailing [email protected], or donating to the Kickstarter campaign of the same name funding the project. For further information please contact;Emma [email protected]@emmalouisehillmanhttp://www.emmahillman.com/# # #
