Couple's hazelnut wedding cake sparks new business

One of the most memorable elements of Kristen and Frank Pizzo's Valentine's Day 2015 wedding was their hazelnut, chocolate and vanilla wedding cake.

Recently, the newlyweds were trying to decide what type of business to open.

"We had always fantasized about owning a business, but the timing this year made it right. We chose to make candles because we were out one day and a smell wafted over us that reminded us exactly of our wedding cake, a delicious hazelnut-chocolate-vanilla, and we laughed about how nice it would be to relive that moment over again," said Kristen, 31, who is also an English teacher.

The couple took that idea and ran with it.

In August, the Pizzos launched Candle Moments -- an online, homemade candle company that produces candles with names like, "Quiet Kids," "Weekend Getaway" and "Sick Day." The candles have scents of vanilla, lavender, pistachio, whipped cream and more.

"Kristen had been experimenting with the different uses of essential oils, and wondered if she could actually recapture that moment from our wedding, and so the idea of a candle, which could capture moments was born," said Frank, 31, who also works in the corporate world.

The Rizzos said they have the perfect making of a business partnership.

"Aside from being married, we're best friends, and we share the same entrepreneurial spirit. ...We don't have to be shy about our thoughts and crazy ideas, and we don't need special meetings to toss those ideas around. We're very much a team, who respects and cherishes each other, so we don't have to dance around the hard discussions," said Kristen.

UNIQUE PRODUCTS

The Pizzos feel their key to success will be based on the uniqueness of their products.

"Our candles are unique because they are created from an all-natural soy blend, which supports American Soy Farmers and is a renewable resource," said Frank.

"We also have a proprietary blend that we create for lotion candles, which is not really found in the standard candle market. We are completely vegan and cruelty-free; we're seeking accreditation from PETA to validate that statement. Instead of just labeling scents, we create candles based on moments in people's lives that warrant recapturing," he added.

The Pizzos claim that soy candles have a number of advantages over traditional paraffin and beeswax candles.

"Soy candles come from a completely renewable resource, which also supports American Soy Farmers. We only buy wax from American farms because they do not use deforestation methods, and because we believe in supporting American workers," said Kristen.

RIDING THE ECOMMERCE WAVE

The Pizzos said they launched the online-only business because they believe "eCommerce is the way of today," said Frank.

"Without a website and an online affiliation, it's hard to be recognized. ... The fun part of this type of business is the versatility; a simple switch or addition to our website and we can create a whole new product line. Plus, we are able to market our product across the country," he said.

However, there are challenges that arise in the eCommerce world.

"The challenges of eCommerce are building the local market and the consistent transporting of product to trade shows. People like physically touching and smelling candles, so even though we can explain the scent, it's not the same as smelling it for themselves," said Kristen.
