Exploring New-look designer wear

There is always something fascinating about an Anarkali or a Pakistani style salwar suit. It is a lovely mix of elegance and grandeur, femininity and grace that elevates the look of the wearer to captivating allure.

02/03/16, Hyderabad, Telangana, India - Anarkali and Pakistani style suits have very little to differentiate in the true sense. Both are centrally featured with a breath-taking kurta to highlight opulence and charm.

The Anarkali suit is made up of a long, frock-style top and features a slim fitted bottom. The Anarkali is an extremely desirable style adored by women located in India, Pakistan and The Middle East that varies in many different lengths and embroideries including floor length styles.

It is the styled designer kurta akin to the kameez that is in focus, which gives it its name. Coupled with a salwar and accompanied by a stylish dupatta, it becomes an Anarkali suit.

Anarkali suits owe their name to the fictional Anarkali, a courtesan in the court of Mughal emperor Akbar who was legendarily murdered for her illicit relationship with the Crown Prince. This is since a timeless style that has become popular.

The Pakistani salwar suit was once made from good quality long staple cotton and with the kurta slightly longer (upto the ankles) than the Anarkali suit, had a distinctive look and appeal.

This also finds favour with women in India with its artistic designs and embroidery, attractive variations in neck styling, sleeve formats from sleeveless to full length sleeves, neck designs and fastening methods, borders, current day designs etc.

There is variety and variation when it comes to the Anarkalis. A choice of necks, from round, square, V, U, with light, embroidery or plain, a whole host of vibrant colours and pleasing hues, with options of sleeves, no sleeves, half sleeves and three fourth sleeves, and styles like double layered, tail cut, no wonder the Anarkalis are endearing choices for most women in India.

Borders could be plain, single coloured, multi-coloured or with embroidery, finery etc. Colours and colour combinations, motifs, interesting patterns, block prints, abstract art are all ways of getting the best results possible for unique innovative creations.

The Anarkali has been likened to similar styles of suit displays in the women’s Firaq partug (frock and shalwar) of North Western Pakistan and Afghanistan, the traditional women’s Central Asian clothing of parts of Central Asia, the Anga of the Punjab region and the Peshwaz worn in Jammu.

Paineeti Lal, marketing and media manager at Unnati Silks has this to say regarding the new line. “A new line of designer wear in Anarkali and Pakistani style suits has been introduced at Unnati Silks. Besides adhering to the usual styling, there are some innovations that are fairly unique and captivatingly attractive. One is the accent on pure handlooms in cotton, silk, blends, art silk and other envisaged materials in the near future.”

She also adds, “Variety in length and format of sleeves are judiciously combined, with an accent on beautiful shapes and sizes of neck to suit tastes, especially with artistic embroidery and fastening ideas to accentuate the look. Fields plain, colored with floral designs, other colorful patterns and matching or contrast borders with their embroidery or colored stripes or bands serve to achieve heightened effects”.

A departure has been made this time with hues derived from the use of organic dyes, providing good adhesion and durability.
