The founder and lead surgeon of the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise talks about the benefits of radiosurgery.

Decatur, TX, – Brain cancer patients who are treated with stereotactic radiosurgery instead of whole brain radiotherapy may enjoy a higher quality of life. That’s according to a newly released study that looked into the potential benefits both forms of treatment may offer patients who face brain metastases.

The study in question involved more than 200 patients. Participants had an average age of 60, and each had between one and three brain metastases. Patients were observed over a three-month period after having undergone either radiosurgery or radiotherapy.Previous studies have shown that radiotherapy can result in a reduction of patients’ cognitive brain function. This is mostly associated with a slowing of speed and short-term memory concerns.

“Patients treated with radiosurgery displayed fewer cognitive concerns while also reporting a higher a higher quality of life,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. “The findings are significant in that preserving quality of life in these cases for as long as possible is a primary treatment concern.”

Radiosurgery involves the delivery of highly targeted radiation doses directly to small tumors. The aim is to spare as much of the surrounding healthy issue as possible. Whole brain radiation, however, is able to treat tumor cells that are not readily visible to the naked eye. Neither procedure is considered a “cure” when cancer has spread to the brain, but they both can help control symptoms for a time.

Researchers behind the study say their findings may assist doctors in personalizing treatment recommendations on a patient-by-patient basis.

“It is important for patients and doctors to carefully review all treatment options, their risks and potential benefits,” says Dr. Echt. “The most appropriate recommendation will depend on specifics unique to a patient’s case.”
