Todd Shupe is a distinguished scholar who is an expert in the field of wood science. As an avid believer in the importance of understanding the way we use wood and improving the quality of wood products, Todd presents the following wood science project for children and adults who want to further their knowledge of wood types and their properties.

Project Objectives

To present groups of various kinds of wood
To explore the ways that we utilize wood
To identify innovative applications for timber
To support the evolution of improved wood items

Study Inquiries

How many classifications of wood are there?
What are the functional applications of wood?
In what areas is wood used?
How do the qualities of wood work well within these areas?
What are the qualities of wood substitutes?
What other areas may benefit from the use of wood?

Wood is a natural substance located in the stalks of trees. People can compare different classifications of wood and wood substitutes to acquire more knowledge about wood overall. With this method, people can examine the numerous functional applications of wood and connect wood to other elements that might have the ability to achieve the equivalent ends. As you learn about wood while working on this project, attempt to brainstorm new uses for wood that have not been recognized thus far. Be sure to write down any new ideas you have.

To conduct the experiment, you will need all of the following materials and supplies.

A computer or smartphone with internet access
A variety of different wood samples of various classifications
Magnifying glass and a microscope if desired
A camera
Papers, pens, pencils, and poster-board

Project Method

Learn the characteristics of hardwood, softwood, engineered wood, knots, and sapwood.
Browse and read summaries of relevant wood timbers. A few options you may want to explore include bamboo, cedar, pine, walnut, spruce, beech, ebony, maple, ash, elm, hemlock, fir, ironwood, hickory, cherry, cypress, and mahogany.
Assemble actual wood specimens and download pictures of each wood type.
Order your specimens based on their characteristics and applications.
Create a report including charts and graphs to convey your conclusions.
