How eye color change evolved from temporary to permanent

Science has accomplished what was once impossible and managed to make it accessible in all ways. This is proof of how far it has its reach.

Eye color change was once unfathomable and still is even though it’s shockingly true. The only ways it was naturally observed were unfortunate medical situations like extreme mood changes or acquired (gained the issue post-birth) eye defects. It is otherwise observed in the growing stages of newborns.

The subtly intriguing part is the difference in eye colors. Eye color is ascribed to a component called the iris. It is situated behind the transparent coating (cornea) of the eye. The iris itself showcases color which is then reflected as eye color. This is due to the presence/absence of pigments (melanin and lipofuscin).

An absence of melanin causes photo sensitivity. Fluctuations in environmental light or bright light can cause damage and discomfort. Lipofuscin is only mostly present in green irises. Presence of melanin gives color according to its amount produced.

A few years ago, due to black-marketing of the infamous colored contact lenses, scientists and ophthalmologists considered a permanent solution for eye color change. The technology used to treat iris defects was used to try out a color change. When there’s a defect in the eye, a suitable prosthetic iris is inserted in the eye. Scientists repeated it but made the prosthetics colored. This turned out to be a major success and the US government patented and approved it. There are two methods for color eye surgery – iris implant surgery and laser surgery.

A silicone implant iris is implanted in the eye. This prosthetic is colored and as a result, gives that new color to the eye. This is preceded by a small slit in the cornea (which has to be done for the implantation to take place). Recovery time shouldn’t take long unless any co-morbidities are present.

A laser surgery changes dark irises to lighter ones by the principle of de-pigmentation. It has not, however, undergone any medical trials and is banned. Because of rising demand, many organizations change eye colors through laser surgery instead of iris implantation surgery. The general public, unaware of such technicalities, suffers an economical and risky (health-wise) burden. This has made companies clarify their surgery processes and also provide the public with medical information about eye color change surgeries.

The iris implantation has no major risks if the person receives the right medical attention and isn’t put through the surgery unnecessarily (those with co-morbidities are at risk and so the surgery becomes futile and unwanted).
