Jay Sawyer of Northbrook is an aviation buff who recently came across an article about how Airbus has claimed to have developed the technology to fly passenger planes without pilots. It also stated that the company is working aggressively towards winning over regulators and travelers to the idea. Sawyer highlights references from Airbus’ interview with The Associated Press in which the company shared its plan to sell hybrid and electric passenger jets by 2035. In the interview, the company’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Scherer also said that they already have “the technology for autonomous flying” and for planes flown by just one pilot. “This is not a matter of technology – it’s a matter of interaction with the regulators, the perception in the traveling public,” he was quoted as saying during the interview.

Despite the claims of Airbus, Jay Sawyer of Northbrook believes that we are still far from ready to churn out battery operated jumbo jets. Talking about the right time to introduce large commercial aircrafts, he says it’s a matter that is being discussed with regulators and customers but technology wise there are no big hurdles.
