Been a minute, but we are back with Track of the Week! And we’re back strong with a double edition. This week’s tracks come from two truly soulfully blessed artists – Alex Isley Road to You & Kyan LA.
Kyan continues his string of releases with L.A.
Ever since Kyan got on our radar with his single, Like Summer, a poignant and beautiful track on emerging out of the dark pit of depression, haven’t been able to get enough.
Kyan is simply mesmerising on his latest single L.A. A chilling yet soulfully enthusing track which hints at a gospel sound and epitomises everything that makes soul music what it is. He delivers an effortless vocal performance over a dramatically inviting piano-based beat. The track is an immediate candidate for your streaming libraries. Another track and artist that you should most definitely get familiar with sooner rather than later.
Alex Isley leads with Road To You
Just over a year since releasing the part one of her Beauty of Everything series, Alex Isley is back in a big way with the second part of same titled EP. The lead single Road to You showcases her wonderfully smooth vocals weaved over dreamy production. The track sets the tone for the EP as it’s intro track and exuberates everything what makes Alex Isley another shining light in female R&B.
Lyrically, the track fully resonates as Isley’s vivid storytelling does a brilliant job, letting you into her world of missing a bonafide loved one. Production wise, it’s hard-hitting drums, making it a tune that you can groove to absolutely anywhere. On the whole, this is a great track to kick off the month of May and solidifies Alex as one of R&B’s finest artists.
Double Edition Track of the Week: Ari Lennox ‘Chicago Boy’ & Jhene Aiko ‘Triggered (Freestyle)’
Following her last freestyle single, which dropped at the back-end of 2018, the soulful spirit that is Jhené Aiko is back this week dropping a new track titled Triggered (Freestyle).
The track tells the familiar tale of a breakup which one just can’t get over. Aiko effortlessly weaves her way throughout the track vocally as she paints a vivid picture lyrically into her thoughts. Smooth soul drips through the fibres of this track and reminds us of Jhene’s solidified space in the world of new age R&B / Soul. With her headline show with Neo-Soul goddess Erykah Badu at the o2 Arena next month, I for one am in hope of a short or full length project dropping anytime soon.
Ari Lennox ‘Chicago Boy'
Next up for track of the week is a cut taken off the debut full length album Shea Butter Baby from soulful songstress Ari Lennox. Since signing the J. Cole’s label Dreamville Records she has blessed us with the EP, Pho in 2016 and mesmerised on a few featured tracks, but the wait for a full-length project has been unbearable since.
That said Lennox certainly does not fail to deliver and the intro track off the album, Chicago Boy which illustrates everything about Ari Lennox as an artist. Storytelling that is clear as day, smooth as butter vocals which completely set the tone of the track & production that oozes Soul. Lyrically, she is unapologetically open and honest about her feelings on the track added to jazz-infused percussion, Chicago Boy is an immediate standout on the album.
