I am sure you have heard, seen, or probably even used a padlock before in your life. Have you ever wondered the history of padlocks? Maybe you wonder how they work or the many uses you have never thought of for them. Let us at New Orleans Locksmith help you better understand what a padlock really is. Who knows, maybe you will learn something new today.

The padlock design was originally brought over to America from England and is said to be invented by Edward John Blanthorn Cranswick. The padlock was originally called a smokehouse lock and involved a screw rather than a key. These smokehouse locks did not offer much protection, but as the padlock evolved things changed. Padlocks were first made out of wrought iron sheet, then moved to brass or bronze, and finally it ended up with the laminated padlock which was first introduced by the company Master Lock.

Padlocks have come in all different shapes and sizes. Some were the size of a human head, and heavy enough that you would need two people to lift it. Today, padlocks are, on average, approximately three inches long and have a one inch width. Rather than only being used to lock large gates, they are now used to lock many things such as doors, boxes, gates and even school lockers.

A padlock consists of three main parts: the body, shackle, and a locking mechanism. The body of a padlock is the main portion. The bottom is where the locking mechanism is and on top is the shackle. The shackle is the U-shaped part on top of the lock. It is attached to what is being locked. Most padlock shackles pop out of the body by the turn of a key or entering a code. Today, the coded padlocks are more popular when used for smaller objects. Keyed padlocks are used mostly for attaching to a door or gate.

Padlocks can be used on almost anything that uses a lock. For children, they are mostly used on their lockers at school. Padlocks are also very popular on doors, gates, and trunks. Some small padlocks are also used on windows and luggage. Today, padlocks are even sometimes used as a key chain. You can now find them in all different sizes and weights. Due to this, there is an indefinite amount of ways to use a padlock.

Now that you know some history, how they work, and where to use them, maybe it is time that you purchase one for yourself. New Orleans Locksmith carries various versions of the padlock. You can even find ones in stylish colors if they will be used for something that is seen every day, such as a locker.
