Run ! Airplanes Are Falling From the Sky

We constantly place our lives in the hands of people we don't know and don't know anything about. This is just a little bit terrifying if one looks too closely. I mean, what do
I know about the people on the assembly line that made the brakes that I am counting on to stop the car of the driver behind me that is following too closely in heavy traffic?? How many were stoned? Were any of them on one of those psyche meds that distort reality and can actually cause psychotic behavior?

This takes on a new dimension with airplanes falling from the sky. This shows us it isn't just the action of an isolated individual, or some assembly line workers who got high beyond belief on their lunch hour. This is the collusion of individuals who run companies and answer to stockholders. There are economic ramifications to these decisions. If it is an Air Line, what is the cost of replacing planes that have reached the end of their useful service? if it is a manufacturing flaw, who knew it when and covered it up?

In both scenarios, workers or managers we are looking at competence; physical, mental and moral. Looking at definitions I see that competence means skilled, capable, able. We count on each other to be skilled enough to properly do our jobs, and we trust in the moral and ethical competence of our fellows to make decisions that will benefit the greater good. Perhaps being a skilled manager takes a more comprehensive moral competence. One can look at the planetary corporate culture and see where this breaks down.

But we must keep looking. "In an age of intricate equipment and high-speed machines and vehicles, one's survival and that of one's family and friends depends in no small measure upon the general competence of others.", stated L. Ron Hubbard in The Way To Happiness.

I think we need to ask ourselves first, ant then our fellows, to attain and maintain enough competence that we can all survive.
