Students Helping Honduras: International Volunteer Program with a Difference

Posted January 9, 2019 by shhkids

To help change this situation, the Students Helping Honduras offers opportunities for college students to help build schools for the kids of that nation.

A change is as good as a rest, so it is said. This must have been the logic behind the student mission strips. Every summer, spring and winter, you will notice students flocking their preferred destination spots for an enjoyable break from midterms and essays. While others may spend this time unwinding, some students take a more alternative course to the traditional college break. Heard of an alternative spring break? Well, this is just one of the examples of organized volunteer missions that students take.

Volunteer Abroad?

Most college campuses today offer their students a unique way to spend their vacations. While some of these college programs will spend their alternative break volunteering in the local areas, others often travel beyond their cities and countries to give back to an area considered to be less fortunate. Every college’s alternative vacation program is typically offered through the students’ affairs department or their campus activities. You may want to confirm with your respective colleges how you can take part in those programs. Some schools, on the other hand, will partner with organizations such as Students Helping Honduras for volunteer work abroad.

Why Volunteer With SHH?

Students Helping Honduras is an international volunteer abroad service working with children in the North American country. The mission of this program is to lessen extreme poverty levels and violence in that nation by providing quality education and empowering the youth. Honduras is known to have the worst gang epidemic in the world, with gangs such as the MS-13 and Mara 18 enlisting thousands of children every year. The nation is also the second poorest in the western hemisphere, with 66.2% of its population living in poverty.

To help change this situation, the Students Helping Honduras offers opportunities for college students to help build schools for the kids of that nation. They believe that the Honduran people have a chance to fight back with access to quality education as well as jobs.

You can use your college’s summer volunteering program to visit Honduras on an 8-day trip to give back like you’ve never done. If you wanted to volunteer with Students Helping Honduras, SHH; the best thing is that there’s no requirement to do it. Whether you are a high school student, college alumni, a family or a group of professionals, you can take up this challenge and help give the kids of Honduras hope for a better future by helping build a school.
