A ducted fan reduces losses in thrust from the tip vortices of the fan, and varying the cross-section of the duct allows the designer to advantageously affect the velocity and pressure of the airflow. The versatile duct fans can be used to remove fumes, dirt-laden air, steam, hot air and smoke. They also supply air for cooling, drying and ventilation.
Apart from providing the basic use of duct fan, each fan manufacturer works upon several issues like energy conservation, energy labeling, performance standards, technology development etc.
Duct fans are beneficial in number of ways:
• It operates more efficiently at higher air speeds the designer can adjust the air velocity through the fan.
• For the same static thrust, a ducted fan has a smaller diameter when compared with a free propeller.
• Ducted fans are quiet.
• Ducted fans can allow a limited amount of thrust vectoring.
• Ducted fans offer enhanced safety on the ground.
Due to all these advantages ducted fan propulsion is used in aircrafts, airships, airboats, hovercraft and fan packs.
Ducted fans usually have an odd number of blades to prevent resonance in the duct. The design of these fans also depends upon the temperature where they have to be built.
However there are some disadvantages of using ducted fans:
• Requires very small clearances between the blade tips and the duct for good efficiency.
• Duct design is complex.
• Requires high RPM and minimal vibration.
• Weight is more even if constructed from advanced composites.
