Metal Roof Installation Tips

When doing metal roofing installation the first thing that you need to do is choose the material to do the job.

These can include the hardware, decking, flashing that is appropriate for your existing roof's pitch, framing, and metal roof panels. Having a detailed drawing before you go to purchase the materials to do the job will help you know what hardware you need along with the number of roofing panels. If your metal roofing installation is being done over the existing roofing materials you may need to install furring strips or asphalt paper between the two roofs. You should also make sure that you have assembled the correct tools in advance to ensure that you have all the tools that you need to do the job correctly and quicker. It is also very important that you read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation carefully before starting the job.

To make sure that there is good drainage from your roof you will need to determine the pitch of your existing roof decking. The reason is that there are different designs of metal roofing panels and all will have different roof pitch requirements. Once you have the pitch of your roof then you can select from the various designs for that particular pitch. If the pitch of the roof is low, you may have to have additional sealant and hardware to make sure that you have a roof that is watertight. Metal roofing installation can be used with internal or external fasteners but it is easier to use the external fasteners. The type of flashing, trims, and fasteners that will be used depends on the roofing panels you choose.

The tools that you will need for metal roofing installation include:

• Eye protection
• Fastening tools
• Gloves with a good grip
• For smaller roofing jobs you may just need a cordless drill that has a fastener attachment but if it is a large roofing job you should have a dedicated impact driver.
• To cut across the panel ribs you may just need a nibbler attachment for your cordless drill or power saw that is fitted with a carbide blade for metal cutting. It depends on the size of the job.
• For cutting around obstructions you will need small hand-held metal snips that will make both left-or-right hand cuts.

When doing metal roofing installation the panels should be installed from the peak or gable downward. It should be in the direction that is opposite to the winds that carry the rain. To speed up the installation you can pre-drill the sub-roof to accept the fasteners.
