Wheat is the most important human food grain and ranks second in total production as a cereal crop behind maize and the third being rice. Thus, the wheat seed is also quite important.

However, seed enterprises consider “wheat seed” to be of secondary importance, since it is a self-pollinating crop and the grain can be used as seed, farmers tend to replant their own seed.

The exact place and date of the origin of wheat plant that we recognize today is unknown. Hexaploid wheat, widely grown today thought to have evolved before 7000 BC in an area from just south of the Caspian Sea in Northern Iran Eastward into Northern Afghanistan.

In last ten years significant efforts have been made for commercial exploitation of hybrid wheat through the use of gametocide and CMS lines. Today France and Italy are at the verge of commercial release of such wheat hybrids for grain purposes.

Hybridization has been used to achieve step changes for yield in crops such as corn, rice and canola. Through both collaboration and internal initiatives, Pioneer is exploring a variety of technology options to develop a process for producing hybrid wheat seed on a commercial scale. Pioneer has bred wheat varieties in the U.S. for more than 40 years with a goal of increasing harvestable yield and yield stability. In addition, it has had a plant reproductive biology program devoted to developing hybrid seed production platforms for 25 years. Pioneer is combining its strengths in wheat breeding and research, along with its leadership in technologies for hybrid seed production, to speed the development of hybrid wheat.

China is the world’s largest wheat producer and consumer, and for many years it was the largest wheat importer too. All kinds of traditional Chinese food made from wheat flour, such as noodles, dumplings, pastry and steamed.

At present, the acreage of wheat in China is about 24 million hectares and the demand of wheat seed is about 5.5 billion kilograms, according to the amount of 15 Kg seed per acre with conservative estimates. Affected by traditional habit, farmers still are willing to use wheat seed selected and saved from their harvested wheat and the commercialization rate of wheat seed needs to be improved. With the implementation of the national seed subsidies in recent years, wheat seed commercialization rate is rising year by year in China.

China Wheat seeds Market Research Report 2016 published by QYR shows as follows:

Currently, there are huge number of enterprises those have wheat seed business, the market competition is intensive. The breeding technology of wheat seed is not advanced; involved enterprises had better pay more attention on the technology of wheat seed breeding to gain more market share. In last ten years significant efforts have been made for commercial exploitation of hybrid wheat through the use of gametocide and CMS lines.

Despite the presence of competition problems, due to the demand of wheat is quite tremendous and is growing, investors are still optimistic about this area; the future will still have more new investment enter the field.

Although sales of Wheat Seed brought a lot of opportunities, the study group recommends the new entrants just having money but without technical advantage and downstream support do not to enter into the Wheat Seed field.
