Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia is using his import/export company, TKXPORT, to improve the trade relationships between Gambia and other African nations.

Africa often gets overlooked in conversations about trade relations. The country is not a major manufacturing force in the way South East Asia region is, but Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia believes his company TKXPORT has the potential to be an important contributor to improving pan-African trade relations. Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia founded TKXPORT, his second business, in 2004. His first company, TKMOTORS, founded in 1989, is an automobile manufacturer representation business, which holds the representation rights for Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Ashok Leyland, and JAC Motors. The success of TKMOTORS pushed Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia to begin TKXPORT.

TKXPORT primarily imports construction materials, heavy machinery, spare parts, and some food items from China. TKXPORT then exports these products to various other African countries. It is this second step that Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia sees as potentially transformative. “There isn’t enough trade happening between African countries,” says Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia. “Not only does TKXPORT deal primarily in exports to other African countries, most of what we export is used for building up infrastructure, which can truly change lives.” By exporting construction materials to other African countries, says Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia, those countries are able to develop more complex economies. That development includes building up manufacturing. “What we do at TKXPORT is just the beginning of what has the potential to become a revolutionary pan-African trade network.”

For Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia, pan-African trade relationships are a high priority. Much of his life, Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia has been acutely aware of the poverty that many of his fellow Africans live in. “I consider strengthening trade relations to be a way of helping to relieve the burden of poverty that so many Africans live in. If we can center a greater amount of trade on the continent, among African countries, I think we can really make a difference,” says Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia. Next year TKXPORT will celebrate 10 years in the import/export system. One of Tarek Kalil Musa of Gambia’s goals for that anniversary is to begin building trade relationships with several new African countries, and to increase trade volume with some more established partners.
