Steve Coburn has been an avid golfer most of his life. His father taught him at an early age, where he developed an appreciation for the sport and the levels of accuracy, focus and tuned muscle memory required to put up good scores on the golf course. He also learned about how peaceful and therapeutic it is to be on the greens on a misty spring or fall morning, where it is cool, quiet and a perfect setting for such a relaxing physical activity.

For all of these reasons he developed a love for golf. He never felt much of a desire to ever play in any tournament setting, yet he still found a network of friends that he could enjoy engaging in some friendly competition with. Now at a much older age, Steve Coburn of Los Alamos celebrates years of enjoying one of his favorite past times in another capacity: tournaments for charity.

The Wings for Angels golf tournament is hosted by a conglomerate of New Mexico charitable organizations, and has become an annual event since first putting it together in 2009. The tournament has been held at golf courses in Santa Fe and Albuquerque in the past. For their fifth annual tournament, they will be holding it in Steve Coburn’s hometown of Los Alamos. And as a continuous supporter of these tournaments, he couldn’t be happier to play this year on one of the courses that he grew up training on.

He hopes to take it all this year, seeing as he plans on benefitting from his home-field advantage. He has always been a strong competitor in these tournaments, despite his lack of competitive golf experience. In the very first year, he placed 3rd in the tournament, surprising the community and making his name well-known among Wings for Angels supporters. In the following years he placed in the top five each time, permanently engraving his name into the history of this tournament. Steve Coburn of Los Alamos has finally found an outlet for competitive golf that he can enjoy, all while supporting people in need across New Mexico.
