Decade of Non-Profit Work Celebrated by Doug Sailors

Doug Sailors spent the first part of his career perfecting his skills as a business leader. By 2002, he turned his focus to supporting nonprofit organizations by donating his time.

Doug Sailors was a young and ambitious business professional in the 1980’s. By 1986, he was hired to be the Executive Vice President of an oil company. Focused on growing his career, the ambitious and skilled business professional held the title of president for companies in the waste management and medical industries.

“I enjoyed working in business. Working in various industries gave me a perspective unique to those who focus on one industry. By 2002, I decided to focus my efforts on helping nonprofit organizations,” says Doug Sailors. And in 2002, after conducting organizational meetings and performing the legal filings for The Phoenix Project in Nashville, Tennessee, Doug Sailors was given the organization’s Letter of Appreciation.

Honored for the recognition of his donated work, Doug Sailors would spend more donated time helping different nonprofit organizations. In 2006, Doug Sailors helped to structure a nonprofit 501C3 organization called Life Before Birth. To give it legal status, Doug Sailors again performed the legal filings for the organization.

Doug Sailors began his services helping nonprofit organizations when he became an independent consultant. “The change felt right. I spent years working for different companies and becoming an independent consultant meant I could help many companies in multiple industries while also providing guidance and services for nonprofit organizations,” says Doug Sailors.

Doug Sailors found a real calling in nonprofit in 2007, when he was contracted by a large nonprofit management firm to do consulting work with them. In part as a result of Doug Sailors’ guidance, the charities managed by this firm have provided over $18 million in program services over the past five years. When asked about this accomplishment, Doug Sailors is humble. “It’s not about how well one person performs,” he says. “I come into a situation, and I try my best to get those involved in the situation to see things in a different light. It’s easy, as an organization, to have a sort of herd mentality, a corporate mentality that can be hard to see out of. I try to help people to see that there are different ways of going about things, different sorts of solutions, that’s all.”
