He joined the Youth Violence Strike Force, known as the Gang Unit, as a result of his observation of the need for officers on the Strike Force who could communicate effectively with youthful gang members and those at-risk to become affiliated with gangs. Mel dedicated 12 years of his life to the support of, and changing the lives of, inner city Boston youth, developing strategies to access kids at a crucial point in their lives.
